Anthurium green spathes instead of red: light (90%)

Green spathes Anthurium: insufficient light in 90 percent of cases. Anthocyanin pigment mechanism and complete solution.

The Spriggo team 5 min read

Spathes emerging green instead of red on Anthurium signal in 90 percent of cases an insufficient light. Very specific signal: not light missing for photosynthesis (plant makes leaves normally) but light needed for red pigment production (anthocyanins). 1-minute diagnosis, simple solution: reposition.

Why spathes turn green

The red color of Anthurium spathes comes from anthocyanin pigments, complex molecules the plant synthesizes in spathe cells. This synthesis demands lots of light energy (indirect UV and bright light).

In sufficient light: plant can produce anthocyanins in quantity, spathe emerges bright red.

In insufficient light: plant saves energy by not investing in pigments. Spathe stays at base color (chlorophyll of deep cells), i.e. greenish.

Smart adaptive mechanism, but aesthetic result deprives you of characteristic red Anthurium look.

1-minute diagnosis

Question 1: spathe emerges green or turns green over time?

  • Green from opening = lack of light (this article)
  • Red at opening, turns green after 6-12 weeks = normal aging

Question 2: distance from window?

  • 0-2 m from east/west/south window with sheer curtain = not the light, check other causes
  • 2-4 m from window = insufficient light likely
  • More than 4 m, hallway, or windowless room = very probable

Question 3: period?

  • Winter = natural seasonal worsening
  • Year-round = structurally insufficient position

Solution: reposition or add light

Solution 1: reposition

Move Anthurium 1-2 m from east, west or south window with filtering sheer curtain. Bright indirect light is ideal:

  • Not too direct (would burn green leaves)
  • Not too far (insufficient for pigments)

Time to see red spathes: 2-4 months (new spathe formation + pigment production).

Solution 2: LED grow light

If repositioning impossible (dark apartment, layout constraints):

  • Full-spectrum LED 15-30W
  • 30-50 cm above plant
  • 6-10 hours per day (on timer)
  • Color temperature 5000-6500K (cool or neutral white)

Budget 30-80€. New spathes will have characteristic red color.

Solution 3: rotation between 2 rooms

If you have a bright room (south kitchen for example) and a room where you want to display Anthurium (north living room), do a 2-3 month rotation: 2 months in bright room to produce red spathes, 1 month in display room to enjoy result.

Special cases

White Anthurium turning green

White cultivars have few anthocyanins but still contain some (responsible for pure white, distinct from greenish). Same mechanism: in insufficient light, white turns greenish.

Pink Anthurium fading

Pink cultivars are between red and white in pigment terms. In insufficient light, pink becomes light green then green.

Purple Anthurium turning dark green

Purple cultivars (e.g. ‘Black Queen’) have even higher anthocyanin concentration. In insufficient light, purple turns very dark green.

Existing green spathes: what to do

Don’t cut existing green spathes (they photosynthesize like leaves). Leave until they brown naturally (life cycle 3-6 months).

Cut stalk at base with disinfected scissors when spathe completely browned. Frees energy for next spathe (which will be red if you’ve corrected light).

Frequently asked

Can a green spathe turn red again?

No. Red anthocyanin pigments are fixed at spathe formation. A green spathe will stay green permanently (then turn paler green with age, never red). New spathes formed after repositioning to light will be red.

Do all green spathes signal lack of light?

No, careful. Normal spathe turns pale green after 6-12 weeks (natural aging). Different from spathe that emerges green from its opening (lack of light). Criterion: color at initial appearance, not after several weeks.

My white Anthurium turns green too?

Yes same mechanism. White and pink cultivars have less anthocyanins but still contain some. In insufficient light, they turn greenish like the reds.

How much light is enough?

Anthurium needs about 1500-2500 lux to bloom and keep red pigments. At 1-2 m from an unobstructed east or west window, you're in this range. At 3-4 m from window, you drop below 1000 lux and spathe turns green.
