Corn plant yellow leaves: overwatering in 70% of cases

Yellow leaves on Dracaena fragrans: overwatering first, basal aging, lack of light, or deficiency. Diagnosis and solution.

The Spriggo team 6 min read

Yellow leaves on Dracaena fragrans signal in 70 percent of cases an overwatering with beginning root rot. More rarely: natural aging of base leaves, chronic light deficiency, or nutrient deficiency. Corn plant prefers drying between waterings, overwatering is the most frequent trap.

Which signals to check first

Which leaves yellow: lowest (normal cycle) or several in middle and top (active problem)?

Speed: 1 leaf in 1 month or several in 1 week?

Substrate: finger at 3 cm. Dry, moist, or saturated?

Cause 1: overwatering (70% of cases)

Classic trap. This semi-arid African plant prefers drying between waterings. Many owners water like a “normal” plant weekly. Substrate constantly moist → roots rot → leaves yellow from “thirst” despite water present.

Symptoms: multiple yellow leaves in weeks (not just at base), substrate stays moist 7+ days, sometimes mildew smell, trunk softens slightly at base.

Solution:

  1. Remove plant, inspect roots (healthy white/firm, rotten brown/soft)
  2. Cut all rot with disinfected scissors
  3. If over 70% rotten: propagate healthy top
  4. Otherwise repot in fresh draining substrate (50% potting + 30% perlite + 20% sand)
  5. No watering 10-14 days
  6. Resume every 12-14 days

Recovery in 4-8 weeks.

Prevention: every 10-14 days summer, 18-21 days winter. Always finger-check before watering. Empty saucer 30 min after. Pot with drainage mandatory.

Cause 2: natural aging (15% of cases)

The lowest leaves yellow and drop one by one as plant grows. Normal tree-like growth cycle. Trunk reveals progressively.

Symptoms: 1-2 base leaves per month, slow yellowing over weeks, rest of plant healthy, active top growth.

Solution: none. Cut yellow leaf at base. This characteristic gives Dracaena fragrans its miniature-tree silhouette over years.

Cause 3: chronic light deficiency (10% of cases)

Corn plant placed too far from a window. Oldest leaves yellow prematurely to save energy for young growth.

Symptoms: slow yellowing over months, stagnant growth, yellow stripe of new leaves disappeared (coupled signal), red borders absent for colored cultivars.

Solution: reposition 1-2 m from east, west or north window. See also Corn plant fading variegation for this coupled signal.

Cause 4: nutrient deficiency (5% of cases)

Plant not repotted for over 4 years, never fertilized. Substrate exhausted. Leaves yellow uniformly.

Symptoms: diffuse yellowing across plant, small new leaves, no marked yellow band on new growth (Massangeana cultivar).

Solution:

  • Resume fertilization every 2 months (April-September) at half-dose
  • Next spring, repot in fresh substrate
  • For iron chlorosis (yellow with green veins), chelated iron fertilizer

Cut or leave

Cut as soon as leaf is more yellow than green. Won’t return to green and consumes energy without producing. Cutting redirects energy to new shoots.

Cut at base of leaf with alcohol-disinfected scissors. On Dracaena fragrans, dry yellow leaves often detach with gentle pull.

Frequently asked

Should I cut yellow leaves on Corn plant?

Yes once leaf is more yellow than green. Cut at base with disinfected scissors. A yellowed leaf never returns to green. Cutting redirects energy to new top shoots.

My Corn plant yellows after repotting, normal?

Transplant stress possible 2-4 weeks (a few leaves may yellow). Beyond, check watering: Dracaena in too-large pot stays moist too long, roots rot. Space waterings, verify drainage.

All leaves yellowing simultaneously, emergency?

Yes. Almost always massive root rot or major shock. Remove plant, inspect roots urgently. Recovery possible by stem cutting from upper trunk if roots destroyed.

How many yellow leaves per month is normal?

1-2 base leaves per month part of natural cycle. More than that or yellow leaves elsewhere = active problem. Full diagnosis recommended.
