Mealybugs on heart leaf philodendron: identify, treat, prevent

Mealybugs on Philodendron: pest #1, favored by dry air. Identify white clumps, treat with insecticidal soap, prevent.

The Spriggo team 7 min read

Mealybugs are the most frequent pest on Philodendron scandens. This tolerant plant becomes vulnerable to mealybugs when air is dry and plant isolated.

Identify mealybugs

Mealybugs (most frequent on Philodendron):

  • White cottony clumps, like cotton flakes
  • Size: 1-4 mm, can form patches of several cm
  • Woolly texture, slightly sticky

Typical location:

  • At petiole base
  • Along stems, especially hidden zones
  • Under leaves
  • At leaf/stem junctions

Scale insects: rarer on Philodendron. Small immobile brown bumps, like tiny shells stuck on stems.

Where it comes from

Plant already infested at purchase (~50% of cases).

Contamination from infested neighbor plant.

Dry air and stressed plant: favorable conditions.

Treatment in 4 steps

Step 1, isolate immediately

Move infested plant at least 2 meters from others.

Step 2, mechanical removal (small infestations)

Cotton swab soaked in 70° alcohol, apply directly on each mealybug.

Step 3, insecticidal soap treatment

Prepare:

  • 1 teaspoon liquid insecticidal soap
  • 1 liter lukewarm water

Spray entire foliage: top, bottom, stems, petiole base. Insist on hidden zones.

Renew 3 times at 5-day intervals (D0, D5, D10). Essential to break egg/adult cycle.

Always morning, never in direct sun.

Step 4, check substrate and pot

Wipe pot rim with alcohol. Scrape and replace top centimeter of substrate if mealybugs visible on surface.

Alternatives

Neem oil: 1 tsp neem + 1 tsp insecticidal soap + 1 L lukewarm water.

Soap + vegetable oil mix: suffocates mealybugs.

Extreme cases: systemic insecticide in garden center.

Durable prevention

Monthly inspection under leaves and along stems.

Leaf cleaning with damp cloth once a month.

Increase ambient humidity (50% instead of 30%).

Inspect any new plant 4-6 weeks before placing near others.

When to give up

Over 80% of foliage affected, despite 3 treatments: cut all affected stems flush with substrate, keep rhizome, alcohol shower, repot fresh substrate. New shoot in 2-4 months. Otherwise: replace plant.

Frequently asked

What do mealybugs look like on Philodendron?

White cottony clumps like cotton flakes, on stems, at petiole base, under leaves. Strongly adhere (resist blowing). Sometimes also brown scale, immobile, like small shells.

How to treat mealybugs naturally?

Method 1: 70° alcohol on cotton swab, apply directly on each mealybug. Method 2: liquid insecticidal soap, 1 teaspoon per 1 L lukewarm water, spray entire foliage 3 times at 5-day intervals.

Where do mealybugs come from?

3 sources: 1) plant bought already infested, 2) contamination from another houseplant, 3) too dry ambient air weakening plant. Systematic inspection of any new plant before introduction.

How long to eliminate an infestation?

3-6 weeks with regular insecticidal soap treatment. Monitoring 2-3 more months after. Massive infestation: sometimes 2-3 months treatment.
