Watering a ZZ plant: frequency, method, mistakes

Complete ZZ plant watering guide. Every 14 to 21 days in summer, 21 to 30 in winter. Mandatory finger test. The killer mistake: overwatering.

The Spriggo team 7 min read

Watering is the only topic requiring attention on ZZ plant. All other aspects (light, humidity, fertilization) are absolutely simple. But watering is the killer move: 80 percent of ZZ plants that die indoors are victims of overwatering. The rule is counterintuitive: ZZ needs less water than you think.

Frequency: half as often as other plants

ZZ plant stores water in its fleshy bulbous rhizome under the substrate, like a cactus. This reserve lets it survive 3 weeks, sometimes 4 or 5, without watering. Consequence: do not water until reserve is depleted.

Indicative frequencies:

Summer (April-September): every 14 to 21 days. Heat evaporates faster, plant consumes a bit more.

Winter (October-March): every 21 to 30 days. Slowed growth, minimal consumption.

Very bright warm room: rather 14 days summer, 21 days winter.

Dim cool room: rather 21 days summer, 30 days winter.

These are markers. The finger test is the only reliable judge.

The finger test: the only true judge

Push finger 5 centimeters deep in substrate, next to plant.

Substrate totally dry to touch: can water. The moment.

Substrate slightly moist: wait 5-7 days, retest.

Substrate clearly moist: wait longer, or do not water at all. Rot risk.

This test takes 10 seconds. Avoids 95 percent of ZZ plant problems.

The method: from above, simply

No complications.

  1. Remove pot from cachepot.
  2. Water gently from above with room-temperature water (never cold straight from tap).
  3. Continue until water flows through pot holes.
  4. Drain 5 minutes over the sink.
  5. Return to empty cachepot (no water inside).

Check 1 hour later that water does not stagnate in cachepot. Otherwise empty again.

Water: no complication

ZZ plant tolerates tap water better than most houseplants. Only excessive limescale (very hard regions) causes brown tips long term. Solutions:

Tap water left 24 hours in a carafe: chlorine evaporates, limescale remains. Acceptable for ZZ.

Filtered water by Brita pitcher: if avoiding brown tips.

Rainwater: ideal but not essential for this tolerant plant.

Always at room temperature. Cold water = thermal shock = unnecessary stress.

The 5 mistakes to avoid

Watering by calendar without checking. Especially in winter. Cause of death #1. ZZ can go 5 weeks without water in heated dim winter without issue.

Cachepot with stagnant water. Empty after every watering. Always. No exception.

Heavy substrate. Classic potting soil alone retains too much water. Always mix with 30 percent perlite minimum.

Pot without drainage holes. No drainage = guaranteed rot. If closed decorative pot, keep inner pot with holes.

Misting leaves. Useless (ZZ tolerates dry air) and promotes fungal spots.

Always check at finger first. These are indicative.

When overwatering kills (and you don’t see it)

Excess water is not immediately visible. ZZ stores water in rhizome, which rots silently for 3-6 weeks before first symptoms (soft stems, yellow leaves) appear at surface.

When you see symptoms, rhizome is already partially destroyed. Rescue is possible (see soft stems) but requires repotting, cutting, drying. Better prevent by underwatering than cure.

Remember: on ZZ plant, the worst enemy is the too-kind watering can.

Frequently asked

How often should I water a ZZ plant?

Every 14 to 21 days in summer, every 21 to 30 days in winter. Half as often as most houseplants. But calendar is not enough: always test substrate at finger 5 cm deep. Dry = water. Moist = wait 5-7 days.

How do I know if my ZZ needs water?

Three signals: 1) substrate dry over 5 cm at finger (the only real test), 2) light pot when lifted, 3) stems still firm (plant not stressed). If one is missing, wait more. Better underwater than overwater.

Should I mist the leaves of a ZZ plant?

No, not necessary. ZZ tolerates dry air without complaint. Misting even promotes fungal spots if repeated. Wet cleaning of leaves once a month to remove dust is enough.

What about prolonged absence of one month?

No problem for ZZ plant. Before leaving, water normally, empty cachepot. Place plant in bright but cool spot (not next to radiator). On return, check substrate at finger before watering. ZZ easily holds 4-6 weeks without water in winter.
