Diagnosis
Aloe vera with brown leaves: 4 causes and solution
Brown leaves on aloe vera: sunburn, hard tap water, chronic dehydration, or cold shock. Diagnosis and action plan.
Brown leaves on aloe vera have several possible causes, unlike soft leaves which are almost always root-related. Identifying the exact cause among 4 main ones allows effective action and prevents spread.
5-minute diagnosis
Which part is brown: tips only, edges, or whole leaf? Pattern gives the cause.
Plant recently moved to sunnier spot? Sunburn likely.
Water used: hard tap? Long-term accumulation.
Touch the brown zone: dry crispy = burn or dehydration. Soft = rot.
Cause 1, sunburn
Sudden appearance after move to south window without transition, or summer outdoor exposure after indoor winter. Leaves burn within hours, especially most exposed.
Recognition: brown or white spots on leaf top, sometimes red-orange on edges. Appears sun side. Dry papery texture.
Solution: move immediately at least 1 meter from south window, or place sheer. Acclimate progressively (2 weeks) before re-exposing. Cut brown zones with disinfected scissors.
Aloe vera loves sun, but acclimate progressively to avoid burns.
Cause 2, hard tap water
Chronic limescale accumulation in substrate burns leaf tips long-term. Appears month after month.
Recognition: tips brown uniformly, whitish deposits sometimes visible on pot rim or substrate surface. Tap water used regularly in hard water region.
Solution: switch to rainwater, filtered water (Brita) or tap water left 24h open air. Rinse substrate with filtered water every 6 months to flush accumulated salts.
Cause 3, chronic dehydration
Aloe vera has not had water for 6-8 weeks summer, or over 3 months winter. Leaves draw on reserves, become wrinkled then brown.
Recognition: wrinkled leaves, tips or edges becoming dry brown-beige. Very dry substrate, light pot.
Solution: soak pot in basin of lukewarm water 30 minutes. Drain well. Resume regular watering rhythm (14-21 days summer, 30-45 winter).
Leaves become firm again in 1-2 weeks, but brown tips remain.
Cause 4, cold shock
Frost or intense cold exposure (under 5°C). Cells burst, leaves become soft then brown on surface.
Recognition: aloe taken outside in fall/winter, or exposed near poorly insulated window. Brown leaves on cold side.
Solution: bring inside immediately to 18-22°C room. Cut very affected leaves. Plant can survive if rhizome unaffected.
Summary table
| Clue | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Brown spots on sun side | Sunburn | Move or sheer |
| Uniform brown tips, white deposits | Limescale | Change water |
| Wrinkled leaves, very dry substrate | Dehydration | 30-min soak |
| Plant exposed to cold | Cold shock | Bring inside immediately |
Expected recovery
Sunburn corrected: new healthy leaves in 4-8 weeks.
Limescale eliminated: progressive improvement over 6-12 months.
Dehydration rehydrated: firm leaves in 1-2 weeks, brown tips remain.
Cold shock corrected: recovery in 4-8 weeks if rhizome intact.
