Watering an aloe vera: frequency, method, mistakes

Complete aloe vera watering guide. Every 14-21 days summer, 30-45 winter. Mandatory finger test. The trap: overwatering.

The Spriggo team 7 min read

Watering is the only sensitive subject on aloe vera. All other aspects (light, temperature, humidity) are absolutely simple. But watering is the killer move: 70 percent of aloe vera dying indoors are victims of overwatering. The rule is counterintuitive: aloe vera needs much less water than imagined.

Frequency: half as often as other plants

Aloe vera stores water in its fleshy leaves like a cactus. This internal reserve lets it survive 4-8 weeks without watering. Consequence: water only once reserve consumed.

Indicative frequencies:

SeasonFrequencyConditions
Summer (April-September)Every 14-21 daysRoom 22-26°C, bright light
Winter (October-March)Every 30-45 daysRoom 18-22°C, moderate light
Summer heatwaveEvery 10-14 daysOver 30°C, direct sun
Heated very dry winterEvery 21-30 daysOverheated room, very dry air

Always check at finger first. Calendar alone is dangerous.

The finger test

Push finger 5 centimeters in substrate next to plant.

Dry to touch: can water.

Slightly moist: wait 7-10 days, retest.

Clearly moist: DO NOT water, wait more.

This test takes 10 seconds and avoids 90% of problems.

The method: from above, abundantly

  1. Remove pot from cachepot.
  2. Water abundantly from above with room temperature water. Water should flow through holes.
  3. Drain completely over the sink (5-10 minutes).
  4. Return to empty cachepot.

Watering should be rare but abundant, never frequent and light. Plant prefers clear dry/wet cycle.

Water: prefer non-hard

Aloe vera tolerates tap water short-term, but limescale accumulates in substrate and causes brown tips long-term.

Solutions ranked by quality:

Rainwater: the reference, free if collected.

Filtered water by Brita pitcher: practical in urban apartment.

Tap water left 24h: chlorine evaporates, limescale remains. Acceptable occasionally.

Always at room temperature, never cold straight from tap.

The 5 mistakes that kill

Watering by calendar without checking. Cause #1 of death. Especially in winter.

Cachepot with stagnant water. ALWAYS empty after watering. No exception.

Heavy substrate. Classic potting soil alone retains too much water. Mix 50% cactus + 30% sand + 20% perlite.

Pot without drainage holes. Guaranteed rot in months.

Misting leaves. Useless and promotes crown rot.

Adapt to plant phases

Active growth (spring-summer): regular watering every 2-3 weeks, plus diluted cactus fertilizer once a month.

Winter rest: very spaced watering every 4-6 weeks. No fertilizer.

Stressed plant (recent move, repot): wait 2-3 weeks before watering.

Plant in full summer sun: may consume faster, check at finger 2x per week.

Frequently asked

How often should I water an aloe vera?

Every 14-21 days in summer, every 30-45 days in winter. Substrate must dry completely between waterings. Finger test 5 cm deep: dry = water, moist = wait. Calendar indicative only, finger is the only reliable judge.

How to know if my aloe vera is thirsty?

Three signals: 1) substrate dry over 5 cm at finger, 2) light pot when lifted, 3) leaves slightly wrinkled (sign plant draws from reserves). If you see signal 3, time to water without delay.

Should I mist aloe vera leaves?

No, never. Aloe vera tolerates dry air perfectly and dislikes water on leaves. Misting promotes crown rot. Wet cleaning once a month to remove dust suffices.

What about a month-long absence?

No problem. Before leaving: water normally, empty cachepot, place plant in bright but cool spot (not next to radiator). On return, check substrate at finger. Aloe vera easily holds 6-8 weeks without water in winter.
