Toxicity
Aloe vera toxic to dogs: protocol and precautions
Aloe vera TOXIC to dogs. Anthraquinones and saponins cause vomiting, diarrhea, red-brown urine. Emergency protocol.
Aloe vera is toxic to dogs due to anthraquinones (notably aloin) and saponins present in yellow latex under green leaf skin. Typical symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, red-brown urine. Mortality rare but marked discomfort for 24-48 hours.
Why aloe vera is toxic to dogs
As for cats, yellow latex under green skin is responsible. Contains:
Aloin (anthraquinone): potent digestive irritant, laxative, causes red-brown urine.
Saponins: surfactant compounds irritating digestive mucosa.
Anthraquinone glucosides: amplify effect.
Pure transparent gel at leaf core is non-toxic and even usable on dog skin for mild irritations (external only, after well draining the leaf).
Symptoms in case of ingestion
Onset: 6-12 hours after ingestion.
Typical symptoms:
Repeated vomiting, often containing plant fragments.
Diarrhea, sometimes loose, sometimes more liquid. Rarely bloody.
Red-brown or dark orange urine: characteristic sign. Excreted aloin pigments.
Lethargy, food refusal.
Tremors in some cases, especially small dogs.
Dehydration if vomiting and diarrhea prolonged.
Abdominal pain: dog may bend over, refuse to move.
Symptoms last 24-48 hours generally. Mortality rare but marked discomfort.
Difference with cat
Dogs often less curious about plants than cats. But puppies and curious young dogs willingly chew.
Similar symptoms but often more moderate at equal quantity (dogs are larger).
More marked diarrhea in dogs, less intense vomiting.
Very rare recurrence: dog learns from unpleasant experience.
Emergency protocol
Step 1, remove plant. Out of reach immediately.
Step 2, fresh water available. To limit dehydration.
Step 3, surveillance 24-48 hours. Note:
- Vomiting (count, content)
- Diarrhea (consistency, frequency)
- Urine color
- General state (lethargy, appetite)
- Hydration
Step 4, contact vet if:
- Vomiting beyond 12 hours
- Bloody or very liquid diarrhea
- Red-brown urine persistent beyond 24h
- Marked lethargy
- Total drink refusal for 12 hours
- Small dog (under 5 kg) with symptoms
- Tremors, weakness, disorientation
Vet can administer anti-vomitics, IV fluids, activated charcoal (if ingestion within 2 hours), painkillers if needed.
When emergency is real
Immediate emergency:
- Small dog having ingested whole plant
- Breathing difficulties
- Convulsions
- Extreme weakness
- Blood vomiting
In these cases, don’t wait, contact animal poison control center or emergency vet clinic.
Safe placement
Dogs don’t climb (with rare exceptions), so simpler than cats.
High furniture above dog’s head height.
Closed room during absences.
Hanging at ceiling.
Citrus deterrent spray around pot. Very effective on dogs.
Education: effective method for dogs
Method:
- When dog approaches plant, say firmly “no”.
- When it backs away, reward.
- Repeat at each approach for 1-2 weeks.
Dogs learn fast. Most understand in 2 weeks that plant is forbidden.
Why dogs chew plants
Boredom: more games, chew toys, walks.
Lack of exercise: longer walks.
Separation anxiety: behavioral training.
Simple curiosity: puppies. Supervision and redirection.
