Peace lily not flowering: 5 causes (light mostly)

Peace lily without flowers: lack of light in 60 percent of cases, lack of fertilizer, plant too young, winter rest, or pot too large.

The Spriggo team 6 min read

Lack of flowering on Peace lily is the most frequent aesthetic problem: plant stays green and beautiful, but the characteristic white spathes are missing. Cause number one: insufficient light (60 percent of cases). Followed by lack of fertilizer, plant youth, winter rest, or pot too large.

3-minute diagnosis

When was last bloom. Never (young plant or bought green)? More than a year ago (active problem)? 6 months ago (normal cycle between blooms)?

Plant position. How far from window? What exposure? What season?

Fertilizer history. Regularly fertilized, never, or too often?

Cause 1: lack of light (60% of cases)

Peace lily tolerates low light (survives in dim corners) but needs more light to bloom. Insufficient photosynthesis doesn’t produce enough energy to form spathes.

Typical symptoms: healthy green leaves but no flower for over 6 months, plant placed more than 3 meters from window or in corner without direct light, sometimes new leaves paler than old.

Solution. Reposition plant 1-2 meters from east or north window (indirect but sustained light). Avoid direct south sun (burns leaves). In dark apartment, grow light (full-spectrum LED, 2-4 hours daily) can make difference.

Delay for first bloom after correction: 2-4 months in growing season (April-September). If correction in winter, wait for spring.

Cause 2: lack of fertilizer

Plant not fertilized for over a year, or exhausted substrate. Peace lily needs phosphorus and potassium to produce its spathes.

Solution. Resume monthly fertilization April-September:

  • Green plant or flowering plant fertilizer at half-dose
  • Phosphorus-rich fertilizer (higher P in NPK, type 10-30-20) favors floral formation
  • No fertilizer in winter (vegetative rest, burns roots)

Visible effect delay: 4-8 weeks.

Cause 3: plant too young

A young Peace lily from cutting or division takes 1-2 years before first bloom. Normal, don’t worry.

Recognize young plant: still sparse clump (5-10 leaves), leaves smaller than adult average (15-20 cm instead of 30-50 cm), recent shoot from division.

Solution. Patience. Maintain optimal conditions (light, water, fertilizer). First bloom comes when plant has accumulated enough reserves.

Cause 4: natural winter rest

Peace lily blooms mainly in spring and summer (April-September), sometimes autumn. Absence of spathes in winter is normal: plant enters vegetative rest.

Solution. None. Maintain standard conditions (spaced watering, no fertilizer), wait for spring. Flowering resumes naturally with lengthening days.

Cause 5: pot too large

Peace lily repotted in much larger pot. Plant devotes energy to developing roots to fill pot, at expense of blooming.

Solution. Patience (1-2 years for plant to fill pot and resume blooming) or repot in more suitable pot (only 2-3 cm wider than previous root ball).

Horticulturists’ tip: a Peace lily slightly cramped in its pot blooms more readily than plant with excessive root space.

When to expect next bloom

Natural cycle of adult Peace lily in good conditions:

  • 2-4 cycles per year, mainly between April and September
  • Each cycle lasts 2-4 months (from spathe appearance to complete fade)
  • 1-5 simultaneous spathes on vigorous adult plant

If your plant respects this rhythm, all is well. Otherwise, diagnosis above.

Frequently asked

How long to make Peace lily bloom again?

2-4 months after correcting the cause (light, fertilizer). Peace lily produces spathes mainly in spring and summer, more rarely in autumn. If correction in winter, wait for spring to see first spathes.

Need special fertilizer to make it bloom?

Green plant or flowering plant fertilizer at half-dose, monthly April-September. Phosphorus-rich fertilizer (higher P in NPK) favors spathe formation. Not in winter.

My Peace lily hasn't bloomed in 2 years: why?

Three main causes. 1. Insufficient light (most frequent). 2. Plant too young (young Peace lilies take 1-2 years before first bloom). 3. Pot too large (plant devotes energy to roots, not flowers).

Spathes come out green instead of white: normal?

Not quite. Often sign of too-low light. Normal spathe is pure white then turns pale green after 2-4 weeks. If green from opening, reposition plant closer to window.
