Toxicity
Is Peace lily toxic to cats? (yes, calcium oxalates)
Peace lily is toxic to cats. Calcium oxalate crystals throughout the plant. Symptoms, emergency steps, safe alternatives.
Yes, Peace lily is toxic to cats. Whole plant (leaves, stems, spathe, spadix, roots) contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause intense oral irritation upon contact or ingestion. Toxicity rarely fatal but discomfort is marked and white spathe attracts curious cats.
The danger: calcium oxalate crystals
Like all Araceae (Peace lily’s botanical family, also includes Anthurium, Monstera, Pothos, Dieffenbachia, Calla, Philodendron), the plant stores in its tissues microscopic needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals (called raphides).
When a cat bites or chews a leaf, these crystals penetrate mouth tissues like micro-needles, causing immediately:
- Intense pain
- Inflammation
- Excessive salivation
- Sometimes release of additional irritating enzymes
It’s a plant defense mechanism against herbivores, effective but painful for curious pets.
Intoxication symptoms
Symptoms appear within minutes of contact or ingestion:
Immediate symptoms:
- Excessive salivation (main sign, sometimes white foam)
- Repeated pawing at mouth
- Characteristic head movements (as if having something in mouth)
- Refusal of all food
Secondary symptoms (1-6 hours):
- Vomiting
- Mild swelling of lips, tongue, or throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Temporary lethargy
Rare but possible cases:
- Severe oral edema (rare, may require vet intervention)
- Respiratory issue if significant throat swelling
- Corneal lesions if rubbing eyes with contaminated paws
Real severity
Mortality rare. In vast majority of cases, symptoms resolve in 24-48 hours without sequelae. Initial pain is often deterrent: cat doesn’t continue chewing plant after first contact.
Increased risk for:
- Kittens (proportionally larger ingestion)
- Old or weakened cats
- Cats having chewed large quantities (rare)
What to do in case of ingestion
Step 1: don’t panic. Most cats recover spontaneously in 24-48 hours.
Step 2: rinse mouth. If cat allows (rarely), gently rinse mouth with clear water to flush residual crystals. Don’t force.
Step 3: offer cold liquid. Milk, cold water, crushed ice. Cold soothes pain and dilutes crystals.
Step 4: monitor for 24 hours. Watch breathing, eating, behavior.
Step 5: consult vet if:
- Salivation persists more than 4 hours
- Repeated vomiting
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Visible throat swelling
- Marked lethargy

Cohabiting with Peace lily and cat
Radical recommended solution: place plant out of cat’s reach (high shelf, hanging basket, room cat can’t access).
Partial solutions:
- Spray plant with diluted lemon juice (cats hate citrus)
- Place coffee grounds around pot
- Arrange orange or lemon peels in pot
- Set up “cat garden” (cat grass, wheatgrass) elsewhere to divert attention
None of these guaranteed. Physical relocation remains the only certainty.
Safe alternatives for cat households
Houseplants non-toxic to cats, aesthetically comparable to Peace lily:
- Calathea orbifolia: large round green leaves, tolerates low light, non-toxic
- Phalaenopsis: flowering orchid, non-toxic to cats
- Maranta leuconeura (prayer plant): small colorful leaves, non-toxic
- Areca palm: light foliage, safe
- Boston fern: green cloud, non-toxic
- Chlorophytum (spider plant): very easy, attracts cats but harmless
Is white spathe more dangerous?
No, all parts contain same crystals. But white spathe, aesthetically attractive and accessible (rises above foliage), is particularly tempting for curious cats. Increased monitoring during flowering periods.
