Peace lily brown tips: 4 causes (tap water mostly)

Brown tips on Peace lily: hard water in 50 percent of cases, dry air, over-fertilization, or exposure. Diagnosis and corrective plan.

Brown tips on Peace lily are an aesthetic but minor symptom in most cases. Main cause: hard or fluoridated tap water in 50 percent of cases. Dry air, over-fertilization and direct sun exposure complete the picture. Leaf stays functional, but browned tips never return to green.

3-minute diagnosis

What proportion of leaves affected. A few tips or all leaves? A few = punctual stress. All = systemic problem.

When did browning appear. Sudden over a few days = exposure (sun, frost) or over-fertilization. Progressive over weeks = water or humidity.

Type of water used. Direct tap water? Filtered? Rain? Hard-water region?

Cause 1: hard or fluoridated tap water (50% of cases)

Most frequent scenario in many regions: direct tap water containing calcium, fluoride (sometimes excess chlorine). These minerals accumulate in tissues at extremities where water evaporates last (foliar transpiration concentrated at tips), burning cells.

Typical symptoms: dry brittle brown tips, sometimes brown-golden border on sides, progressive browning over weeks, multiple leaves affected.

Solution. Switch to softer water:

  • Collected rainwater (free, ideal)
  • Brita-filtered water or similar
  • Tap water left 24-48 hours in open container (chlorine evaporates but not calcium)
  • Distilled water (occasionally, not exclusively, can create deficiencies)

Old brown tips won’t return to green. New leaves will grow without brown tips after a few months of good water.

Cause 2: dry air (heating, air conditioning)

Peace lily comes from humid tropical forests (70-90% natural humidity). In heated apartments, air drops to 25-35% in winter. Excessive evaporation at leaf tips burns cells through desiccation.

Typical symptoms: browning appears mainly in autumn-winter (heating), dry papery tips, sometimes crinkled leaf border.

Solution.

  • Humidifier in room (ideal, target 50-60%)
  • Misting twice a week (useful but temporary)
  • Group plants together (mutual transpiration)
  • Keep away from radiator by at least 1 meter
  • Pebble tray with water under pot (local humidity)

Cause 3: over-fertilization (salts in substrate)

Fertilizer too concentrated or too frequent. Mineral salts accumulate in substrate and burn roots. Visible consequence at leaf extremities.

Typical symptoms: browning even on new leaves upon opening, sometimes white crust visible on substrate or pot edges, rapid browning 2-4 weeks after intense fertilization.

Solution.

  • Flush substrate thoroughly with clear water (3-5 times pot volume, under tap or shower). Leaches accumulated salts.
  • Suspend fertilizer for 2-3 months.
  • Resume at half-dose in growing season.

Cause 4: direct sun exposure or draft

Peace lily exposed to direct south sun (summer) or dry draft (air conditioning, open window). Rapid burning at extremities.

Typical symptoms: sudden browning in 1-3 days, often on exposed side of plant, sometimes associated with yellow-brown discoloration of blade.

Solution. Reposition plant immediately. Indirect light (1-3 meters from east or north window). No direct draft.

Cutting brown tips

Yes for aesthetics. Cut dead tissue following natural leaf shape (in a point or angle), with alcohol-disinfected scissors. Leave a thin brown edge to avoid wounding living tissue. Cut tip won’t regrow but browning won’t progress either.

If more than 30 percent of leaf is brown, cut entire leaf at base.

See also Watering Peace lily for recommended water quality and frequency, and Peace lily yellow leaves if progressive yellowing accompanies browning.

Frequently asked

Should I cut brown tips on Peace lily?

Yes for aesthetics. Cut dead tissue following natural leaf shape (in a point), with disinfected scissors. Leave a thin brown edge to avoid wounding living tissue. Cut tip won't regrow but browning won't progress.

Does tap water really brown the tips?

Yes in hard-water regions. Calcium and fluoride accumulate in tissues at extremities where water evaporates last, burning cells. Solution: rainwater, Brita-filtered water, or tap water left 24 hours to evaporate chlorine.

Why do tips brown more in winter?

Heating drops ambient humidity to 25-35 percent (instead of desired 50-70 percent). Excessive evaporation at tips burns tissue. Solution: humidifier, misting twice a week, group plants together, keep away from radiator.

Browning only on new leaves: different?

Yes. If only new leaves have brown tips upon opening, it's often over-fertilization (salts accumulated in substrate). Rinse substrate thoroughly with clear water, suspend fertilizer for 2 months.
