Peace lily yellow leaves: 4 causes (water in 60% of cases)

Yellow leaves on Peace lily mostly signal a root problem, usually from overwatering. More rarely, it’s natural aging of an old leaf, chronic lack of light, or nutrient deficiency. Diagnosis happens in two steps: observe pattern, then check substrate.

5-minute diagnosis

How many leaves yellowing and how fast. 1 leaf in 1 month or several in 1 week? Speed distinguishes natural cycle from active problem.

Which leaves yellow. Oldest at base (normal cycle) or new at center, or randomly (active problem)? Pattern gives the cause.

Substrate state. Dry, moist, or saturated? Insert finger 3 cm. The most direct indicator.

Cause 1: overwatering (60% of cases)

Most frequent scenario: substrate constantly moist, saucer with stagnant water, pot without drainage. Roots rot, can no longer absorb properly, leaves yellow from inability to receive water and nutrients.

Typical symptoms: progressive yellowing of several leaves over weeks, heavy moist substrate even 5 days after watering, sometimes mildew smell near substrate.

Diagnosis. Remove from pot, inspect roots:

• Healthy: white or cream, firm
• Rotten: brown or black, soft, sometimes slimy

Solution. Cut all rotten roots with disinfected scissors. Repot in fresh draining substrate (50% green plant potting mix + 30% perlite + 20% coconut fiber), pot with drainage holes. Don’t water for 7-10 days. Recovery in 4-8 weeks.

Prevention. Water every 5-7 days in summer, every 8-12 days in winter. Always empty saucer 30 minutes after watering. Pot with drainage holes mandatory.

Cause 2: natural aging (15% of cases)

A leaf at the base, the oldest, slowly yellows and dies. Natural cycle: each leaf lives 12-24 months. On adult plant with 15-25 leaves, 1 yellowed leaf every 2-3 months is normal.

Diagnosis. Single leaf concerned, always lowest, progressive yellowing over weeks, other leaves intact. Active general growth (new shoots at center).

Solution. None. Cut the dead leaf at base with disinfected scissors. Plant will devote energy to new leaves.

Cause 3: chronic lack of light

Peace lily placed in too-dark corner (more than 4 meters from window, or windowless room). Insufficient photosynthesis weakens whole plant, oldest leaves yellow prematurely.

Typical symptoms: slow yellowing over months, paler leaves than usual, slowed or null growth, no flowers for a long time.

Solution. Reposition plant 1-3 meters from a bright window (east or north ideal). Peace lily tolerates low light but still needs minimum. Visible recovery in 4-8 weeks with greener new leaves and potential flowering resumption.

Cause 4: nutrient deficiency

Plant not fertilized for over 12 months, or exhausted substrate (repotted more than 3 years ago). Leaves yellow uniformly but veins stay green (typical iron chlorosis) or yellow globally.

Solution. Resume monthly fertilization April-September with green plant or flowering plant fertilizer at half-dose. If repotting overdue, take advantage of spring to move plant to fresh substrate.

Yellowing pattern and causes

Cut or leave yellow leaf?

Cut as soon as leaf is more yellow than green. Leaf will never return to green: continues consuming energy without producing. Cutting redirects energy to new shoots.

Cut at base of petiole with alcohol-disinfected scissors, without pulling. Dry petiole sometimes detaches alone with gentle pull after a few weeks.
